Hello all,

just about to complete on a lovely new house, which has a double prefab garage in the back garden.

Double width Up and over door: key lost, so will be changing the lock/handle, also planning on screwing 4 blocks of wood to the inside of the door, screwing through from the outside, and drilling the heads out, so they can't be removed, then fitting big bolts on the inside edge of the wooden blocks, and drilling down into the floor, so the bolt can slide into the floor.
This will, I hope, make the door more difficult to lever out.

Side door: poorly constructed wooden door, has a lock but no key, so is only locked via a hasp and padlock (Changed by me) on the outside.
not 100% sure what to do with this one at present, thinking about a few more hasps and locks maybe!
have a couple of yale type mortice locks, so thinkig of fitting both or one of them.

Windows: unfortunately it has several windows and these are old wooden frame, single pane varieties, so these strike me as a fairly large weekpoint.
Has anyone fitted bars across the inside to make them less vulnerable?
Or would I be best just to bolt wood/mdf over them from the inside, so there is nothing too see?
None of the windows are designed to open, which is something I guess.

I am also thinking about either fitting a PIR from the home alarm system, or a standalone system.

Within the garage I plant to lock the bikes up/together so will be looking at ground anchors etc, I guess it doesn't hurt to lock something huge in with them as well, such as a ladder.

Until I'm content with the security, the bikes will be living in the house!

I'll wait for the suggestions to come flooding in

  • For securing the bikes, a ground anchor or a Shed Shackle from

For the up-and-over door, how about fitting a security post in the ground immediately in front of the door? I had a bike nicked once from a garage when the thief simply twisted the rather inadequate lock open.

I'm liking the shed shackle a LOT.

    What's the difference between:

    100mm bolt (No threadlock)
    80mm bolt

    ??

    Cheers

Put the bike at the rear of the garage and stand a large sheet of chipboard etc in front of it.
The bike won't be visible when the door is open so, unless they see you putting it there theives won't know its there.
(Go for a ground anchor also)

Garage defenders work - it's official.
Got one on mine (after two break-ins through bolts, padlocks etc).
No whisper of anyone trying again since.

As double security I fitted a ground anchor plus chain (not sure of the make, but go for stuff on motorbike sites that has Sold Secure rating like the Defender) to lock the bikes to the wall. You could also lock them to the floor if the walls are too flimsy - the anchor will fit to either.

Bikes should be alloy or carbon - for security go for good quality steel !

    Good luck

  • I have just finished updating the security to my double garage due to the impending sale of one of the cars and the bikes having then to move from the comfort of the dining room :( It depends on how much you want to spend really as I got a roller shutter to replace the up and over door, which can't be levered up (expensive but secure) and, I also got a steel personnell door to replace the flimsy wooden one that was installed originally. I will eventually buy a rack and a ground anchor and chain everything together.
Could also leave a savage beast in the garage as extra security - anyone got a spare Lion
