Seatpost recommendation

Afternoon all,

I need to replace my seatpost in the near future and I'm thinking of upgrading to carbon.

It's a 27.2 going on a Ti frame and I have a max budget of £100, does anyone have any recommendations? As my frame is non-compact I think a 250mm would be plenty of length.

Cheers
Steve

Easton EC90 is a really great seatpost. Just a little over your budget on wiggle i think. very comfy and light (160g).

For a Ti frame maybe you want to go for a Ti seatpost to compliment the look? Maybe the USE Alien Ti?

I'd go for the specialized carbon s-works Pave model here:

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.a ... eat%20Post

Seems to get pretty good reviews from people who have them, the Zertz inserts are apprently very effictive and it is just over half your budget - bargain!

I think this will be the next, ahem, upgrade I will get for my bike.

style police alert! if you have a Ti bike it isn't a specialized and you don't want their branding slapped all over it!!

what brand is the rest of your finishing kit?

also, it's a bit lardy compared to other posts like Easton or Deda.

Why not - whats wrong with specialized kit?

I have a toupe saddle and this seatpost and the toupe will be going on my Sunday Silk Road / centaur / ksyriumES summer08 project bike

Spesh make some good fininshing kit I don't see the problem with having it on a non-spesh bike

I'm also a fan. IMHO they seem to be one of the most innovative companies out there.

agreed that the toupe is good, and the branding mercifully subtle!!

the seatposts are OK and seem reliable. they are good value, but I think if you have the £, then Easton are more comfy and definitely lighter.

I just think it's nice to co-ordinate branding on a bike, rather than a cast of thousands approach. i also think Ti has a class about it that deserves a subtle and co-ordinated approach to finishing kit

like the sound of your 08 project though!

Thanks guys. I do have an Airborne Ti seat post at the mo' but the clamp is truly dreadful (either the saddle slips or if I tighten so it doesn't, I strip the bit where the allen tool fits).

And also, I have black wheels/bars/stem etc so a Black seatpost should look great.

I have a Specialized Toupe and bars at the mo so the Pave an option, but I do fancy a lighter model if poss so I'll look at the Easton.

    Thanks again

I've got a Pave (on a ti frame) and it's been fine. Not superlight admittedly, and the top bolt has corroded but easy to adjust, well made overall and good vfm..

Other options that spring to mind are Easton EC70 and EC90, as said, FSA K-Force, Ritchey WCS and Campag carbons, and USE Sumo

Just check how much layback you need too.

The Ritchey would be my choice if the budget could stretch that far (£111 at wiggle)

  • What about the ITM K-Sword? Mine's great, and got it cheap from Wiggle so could be worth a look?

Found somewhere doing the 250mm Pave which comes in at 180g - only 20g more than the Easton, but £50 cheaper - so I've gone for that.

    Thanks for all you help.

if you haven't already done so, check your frame is burr-free before fitting.

My Airborne wasn't perfect and needed cleaning up before the carbon post went in. And it was quite tight too.

  • Every once in a while those screwy lookin' corima posts show up on ebay.com at around 50usd.

I know that I wouldn't want to be clamping a hollow carbon tube like that, maybe you can buy them pre-crushed and save the worry?

i hear of very few carbon seatpost failures and the LBS's i go to say the same thing. it is possible to over-torque them but as long as you're aware of this then it's not hard to get a level of torque that doesn't endanger the post. Against the "carbon will fail" school of thought you have to consider the tens (hundreds?) of thousands of these seatposts out there working with no problems at all.

Plus other materials fail as well.
  • I have fitted a Use Titanium post on my Ti bike. It is a very light and well made looking item. The setting up is a bit fiddly but you only have to do that once. Also you can tighten the seat collar without the risk of crushing it!

I managed to find one for well under £100

Only one seatpost should be fitted to a Ti bike this beauty from PMP.

Would second that - got one on my road bike. Great niche brand, looks good and two bolts on the clamp to keep the saddle tight. I've just ordered the jersey from them as well. Just hope I get to pose in it before it gets too cold.
  • I'd choose by construction and clamp design first rather than by material... and end up with a Thomson.

    They really are rather nice.

Well, Thomson are good for alloy, and I'd say Easton for carbon, suggesting an EC70 as brilliant without being superlight. Amount of setback needed, up to you...

Buy a Ti Sweetpost from Kent Eriksen. I did and it is great.

Email them, place yoru order with katie and it will arrive. Much cooler than anything else out there (and I did my research!) adjustment is also super simple.

By the way, they know a bit about Ti as Kent founded Moots.
  • Just bought a FSA K-Force seatpost, not fitted it yet but it looks the part!

£100 to save about 20g on me existing one but it now matches the rest of the gear, money well spent IMO :D

  • To finish things of nicely I added a Deda Magic Stick to my Ti frame - but then again I do have Deda bars/stem so it really was the finishing touch and at £75 not too pricey.

I've just fitted a Campag Chorus carbon post . My aluminium ITM Millenium snapped while I pulled away from some traffic lights. It had had 4 years of hard use, but I was shocked the way it broke. It snapped where the bolt goes into the cradle. The Campag post looks lovely, has a really solid and very adjustable clamp and was a bargain at £45 from PBK.
