Reset Hayes Nines Piston

I have hayes nines and someone pumped the brake lever when the wheel was not in place so the pads are two close together now when they're in their resting position. What's the best way to reset the piston back to the starting position?

clean tyre levers or screwdrivers (or anything that will fit in the gap as long as it is clean.
