I will soon be changing my gear cable and I have never done this before so I would appreciate your help.

What will I need besides the cable?

Are those gear cable sets a good deal?

I also have a MTB so I'm thinking that whatever I buy now I should buy in more quantity so that I have some for my MTB later on.

Both bikes have shimano gears and brakes.

Thanks in advance

Rick

they re different systems - if you do some "proper british" mudd mountain biking get some flaying snakes from wiggle, they re fully sealed lever to derailleur so no cryud gets it...very very good

they do roadie ones as well, tbh i'm not sure what difference they d make, they re just gonna be a lightness issue - its not like they re gonna get muddy or owt?!

Shimano cable is just fine. I'm also bought sets from Clarks cables, which come with loads of rubber donuts to stop the cable hitting the frame, and metal ferrules for the outer. If you can afford it, invest in a decent set of cutters, and always seal of the cable ends with the aluminium ferrules to prevent fraying. If you've an old, deal wheel lying around, an alternative is to use a spoke nipple. I've been doing this for years.

I'd go for fully sealed on the MTB what with winter fast approaching.......

If you have shimano - use their stuff, campag.. then campag.

Third party stuff is fine, but I've always found OEM the best. My Dura Ace equipped road bike from the 90's is still using the original gear cables because they were/are far better than anything available - even now. I've never seen such a highly weaved cable in years ! It's on the second brake cable set though ? My training bike has been through loads of sets of cables though, all OEM stuff ! Just replace with what's best for your group set, and of course, your 'maintenance' schedule. Not everyone looks after their bikes like everyone else.

If you are a saddo like me and clean the machines when they get dirty, then things last years !
  • Shimano shifter cable is as good as it gets, albeit I"ve never seen it in obnoxious colours, so you may have to shop around*.

For brake cable I've never noticed the least difference in brands. Unlined housing will wear out the cable. Lined housing will eventually jam up. Neither of which is usually fatal if you have two brakes.

*pink and green leopard print would be just right
