New bike for £1000?

After falling off my mtb for the last time and finally losing my bottle, I have decided to treat myself to a road bike. My riding will be mainly leisure / fitness at weekends, I'm not built for racing so want something fairly comfortable.
As I am used to an mtb, should I go for flat bars, something like Giant FCR / Specialized Sirrus or will I adapt to drops? Also, I have seen the latest Kuota Kharma for £1200, with a proper fitting, would this give a suitable ride or should I look for something else??
Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.
