Ok if things could not get any worse today my STI shifter gave up the ghost on me. Now the issue for me is that I can no longer get 8spd 105 which is whats fitted, so it looks like I need to buy SORA shifters, where is the cheapest place to buy ? Just as a side note was thinking of converting this to a fixed wheel, as cost wise it might not be much more. However my frame has vertical dropouts ??

ST-R500s are another option to SORA. I've had these for 8 months or so and find them great. I got them from Ribble - but just checked their site and couldn't see any on there.
They'll be more expensive than SORA - I think they are more akin to Ultegra/105 level.

They are on Shimano's web-site: in the road section, under "other road components".
Here's a link but not sure if this will work:

    Hi,
I removed some Shimano 105 8 speed shifters recently from a 1998 Peugeot Competition 5000.
They are the champagne / type colour. They weren't used much.
Now not so good news, i took them off intending to sell on ebay. Decided to take the cables out but probably went about it the wrong way. For some reason the right hand lever doesn't spring back very well. I haven't had time to look into it but if someone knew what they were doing i am sure it is easily sorted.
If you was interested i could email photos, they're not broken and in good nick but need looking at.
I also have [i think] the front and rear mecs none have been used for a few years,
    regards, Scurry

ditto here I went to change the gear cable today and after doing so it would not spring back nor shift at all ??? Think I might of made an erse of it. Think it will have to be SORA as those R500 are well over a hundred notes and thats alot of cash right now.
  • what sort of condition is your cassette and chain in?

If you are going to need to replace them soon, it might be worth just moving up to 9spd. (spd is more common now, so it'll be easier to get spares in future.

Also, 10 and 9spd derailleurs are backward compatible, and certainly 8 and 9spd stuff is completely interchangable in both directions, so going to 9 doesn't mean new mechs, just new cassette, chain and STI.

Hell - two sets of levers broken, just by taking them off the bike! Are they made of plasticine or some such other material? Play Dough maybe?
  • 10sp Campag Ergo levers work spot on with shimano 8sp....becuse the cable pull is exactly the same 4.8mm you can get them for £40. You just end up having 2 spare clicks, which are locked out by the rear mech, so nothing to worry about.

Why not replace with 9 speed?
I recently got dura ace 9 speed sti from USA on ebay (new) for £120 then got ultegra cassette for £23 off ebay (new)

well I`m certainly keeping an open mind, it looks like it would be the best thing to do as 8spd kit is hard to find.

well had another chat with a LBS on the phone and have come to the conclusion that spending well over a hundred notes even to change to 9spd is maybe not money well spent. Therefore think i`ll try the darkside :p going along to enquire about fixed wheel and then maybe in a few months buy a new bike through C2W.

Mr Grumpy - you could always have my complete Shimano 600 groupset that is 8spd :)

What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!

I don't think mine are broke, just the fact I've missed some technical points.
Maybe someone can help ? How do you remove the cable [gear] from the right hand lever, I took the front cover off expecting to access it from there.
I've took apart Ultegra ones before with no problems, the 105 's from aroung 1998 8 speed just seem so different, as i said before I don't think the're broke.
Also I do have the front and rear mecs for sale if anyone needed any,
    thanks, Scurry
