Using a road cassette on a MTB

I've recently got hold of a road cassette to (according to many riders on sites like these) save weight and improve gear changing.

I've now fitted it and the gear changing is terrible no matter how I adjust it.

Could this be:

1. because I have a MTB rear mech? (SRAM X7 long cage)
2. because I have a MTB chain (SRAM)

Has anyone tried using a road cassette, any hints would be helpful.

Thanks.

Nope just set it up correctly.

it is the same speed. the shifter is sram?

  • it is an SRAM shifter and worked perfectly with my SRAM 11-32 cassette. The new cassette is a Shimano Ultegra 9sp cassette. One thing I notice is that the mech does not move as close to the cassette when moving through the gears (due to the different profiles of the two cassettes). Should this make a difference?

so adjust the big screw at the pivot.

  • I've done that. Still very clunky in operation. Do I need a short cage mech tp cope with the smaller gear range?

have you sorted the chain length?

no you dont have to have a short mech. just set it up correctly.

Im running an ultegra cassette (11-23), dura ace chain, xt rear mech (medium cage) and have no probs...did you fit a new chain? if its a worn chain it wont sit correctly on the new sprockets...you should be getting around a 6mm gap from your top jockey wheel and the largest sprocket..unscrew the b-screw until you get this.
