Replacement chainring for Veloce compact

Hi

My latest bike has the latest Veloce compact chainset with 34-50 chainrings.

I want to replace the 50T with a smaller ring, so three questions:

1. What size BCD do I go for?

2. What's the fewest teeth I can fit for the outer ring?

3. Do Stronglight make some (a favourite of mine)?

The Campag catalogue and web site don't help me.

Campag compact have a 110 BCD. Stronglight make good quality 110 BCD rings, You could easily come down to a 46 outer ring, or even a 42.

    Try http://www.spacycles.co.uk for more information.

PMP also make smaller rings, I`ve got a 46 T on order for my Campag compact as I find that I don`t use teh three small sprockets / big ring much and am for ever dropping form big (50T) to small to find optimal gear; a 46 will let me use teh 17/18/19 range better

Pete,be careful,I also have this chainset and when I first got it I wanted to change the outer ring to a 48,I had a Stronglight and a TA ring "in stock" but neither of them fit,it's not just the odd PCD with the hole behind the crankarm slightly different it's almost as if the "legs" of the chainrings have got a bend in them... I suggest that you take your chainset with you and actually try the rings before you buy.

I think the pre Ultra-Torque Record and Chorus Carbon CT chainsets would not accept standard 110 pcd chainrings and it might be that this 'innovation' has filtered down to all the Ultra-Torque compact chainsets.

TA make the Nerius range of chainrings for these chainsets in 48 and 50t (£45.50) for the outer and 34,36 and 38 (£27.99) for the inner. Prices and sizes are from the current Chicken catalogue.

    Hi

    Thanks for the prompt responses.

As a result I raided my "store" of spare chainrings for my various Stronglight chainsets, and found a 34T 110 BCD.

I will try this for fit before ordering anything (it should look good with a 34/34 setup!).

PMP will, according to my LBS definoitely fit Campag compacts; TA do a Nerius ring also but only at 48 T; PMP item is P-CRN-46/110; UK contact is scott@otagocyclesport.co.uk; good luck!! :D
  • This is a great quality ring, especially for the price:

    http://www.probikekit.com/display.php?code=K8010

Everywhere else they are over £30.

I just got one for my cross bike, and Im really pleased with it. It's a 48t, by the way.

I checked the PMP website, and they do make rings for Campag compact - I hope you have the right thing coming though, as the code is P-CRN-46/110CA - the code you quote is for a ring for a normal compact.
  • i thought all compact road rings were the same, i..e. 110mm PCD?

Apart from for some (most/all?) Campag compacts, as discussed above. They have a bolt behind the arm which isn't in quite the right place - supposedly for engineering reasons, though I suspect it is marketing!
  • oops. I didn't read that post above. My bad.

    HI

I telephoned the (normally very helpful) staff at Spa Cycles earlier, only to have to listen to a tirade about Campag equipment!

Shame really, because they are my usual source for all things chainsets.

Have also emailed Chicken & Son, the importers, for their advice.

Looks like this is going to be a tricky one to solve.

Stronglight do make rings, but they are different from the normal 110 bcd. I Campagnolo wants everyone to fit into the total system concept and only use Campagnolo rings.

    I bet they are great.

Shame for them that other people make compatible rings. The fact that such an attitude seems to exist would make me sure to avoid buying replacement rings from them.

I do wonder how many sales of cranks they lose when people discover this deliberate incompatibility, and whether they make that up in extra sales of rings?

    Hi

Problem sorted - the bike will get a 48T TA Nerius outer ring from my LBS (Two Wheels in Stourbridge). Chicken & Son confirmed that this was compatible.

I would have preferred a 46, but neither TA nor Stronglight make one smaller than 48.

Many thanks for all the useful advice.

To answer part of the OP

46/12, is a good gear, only spinning out at 37mph or thereabouts-similar to 50/13

FWIW, I use 46/34, or 50/36, with 12-25, and 13-26/13-29 respectively, on various Campag and FSA compacts.

    No problem with Stronglight 46T

Just watch your chainline if you fiddle about a lot

Perhaps someone can say what the required length of the Campag BB is for their compacts...?

I think it is the same as the double i.e. 111mm iso square taper.
  • Hi

The issue with replacement chainrings is that the new Ultra Torque chainsets don't have a conventional bottom bracket and don't have a conventional 110 BCD chainring - hence my original posting.

Not sure what the BB length and chainline has to do with changing the rings though.

    Hi All

Replacement 48T TA chainring now fitted. It is described as 110 offset.

Works fine and looks good - very pleased!
