Chain Replacement

This is probably a stupid question (sorry I'm still a bit of a newbie when it comes to this stuff) but I'm having an issue with chain replacement.

Ive had my Giant Yukon 8 months which I use to commute and ride off road whenever I get the chance.

I decided to buy a new SRAM PC58 8spd chain to replace the old KMC Z chain before it over wears.

When i fit the new chain it skips on the rear cassette, there are no loose links and the power link is correctly fitted. I also sized the chain correctly so it exactly the same size as the old one. I also measured the old one and it stretched about 1/16 of a inch over 12 links which from what I have read should be fine, this was a couple of weeks ago though but I don't see much more happening to it over the past couple of weeks.

For now I'm running the old chain again which works fine and is still taking quite a hammering.

Is there anything i can do to get the new chain working nicely or have I left it too late?

The rear cassette wears with the chain. If you are waiting that long between replacing chains you will need to change the rear cassette with it.

I agree with Ciaran500. If you change your chain regularly like I do I can normally get 2 chains per cassette, but if the chain is really worn and you put a new one on, it wont stay on a worn cassette

I was afraid you would say that. I guess ill keep running the old one for a while more and change the lot later, might use it as an excuse for an upgrade.

    Thanks for the info.

Its best to run both your cassette and chain into the ground before replacing them. Buy a new cassette and the problem will be solved!

I usually buy a set of new cables at the same time as the chain/cassette, this solves most gear problems.
