firstly i'd like thanks those who helped me with my creaking handlebars, cheers for the advice, i sorted the problem out allowing me to cycle more only to discover problems.
so, every revolution of the back wheel there is a creaking sound, sounds almost like loading then unloading rapidly. over the past few months 3 spokes have snapped and haven't been replaced, there are also several spokes which are looser than i'd would expect.
the wheels/bike is about 25 years old but the spindle is only a year old (not quick release but what looks like more of a mountain bike style, changed by a lbs as the first one had cracked) the creak started over the past week so have attempted to tighted the spokes that are loose however as they are so old they are seized up and start to twist the spoke if i twist the nut. only happens when seated
been trying all night to find solutions to the problem so i can go on my second club run tomorrow (one of my last chances before university) but have made no inroads. basically, am i looking in the right place for the problem? is there anyway i can fix it quickly tomorrow? will i need a new wheel within the next month?
any rough advoce would be very much appreciated, hope ive given you enough information and havn't just rambled for a while!

I think you already found the problem!
Unless you have some spare spokes more or less the right length, and a spoke key, there's not a lot you can do before tomorrow. I would replace the whole wheel, unless the hub or rim is of any particular value. One spokes start to go, you'll just replace one, then another, then another...0 -
what the hell??? You can get a new wheel for what, 20, 30 quid, even if it is rubbish!!! I reckon your pushiing the boat wanted to repair what is basically an ancient, rusted to hell, battered pile of scrap. Im sorry, its a goner.i ride a hardtail0

The fact that you are missing three spokes and have loose spokes seems to be the source of the noise. You can have spokes rubbing against each other where they cross. Isn't your wheel out of true?
A further source of noise can be a failing rim. I checked for the obvious this month in France when my rear wheel creaked at the same spot in its revolution. I found and re-tensioned the loose spokes but failed to spot the spoke that pulled through the rim until the second or third day of the creaking. I bought a replacement from Decathlon for 36 euros.
Once spokes have started to snap the others will follow especially if you have continued riding the bike with missing spokes. You can either buy a new wheel or have your wheel relaced with new spokes alround. It's a false economy to replce the handful of spokes as you will almost certainly have repeat visits to your bike shop for further replacements.
FWIW - I have had a rear wheel built by my local bike shop for £80 using top quality components to replace the Decathlon wheel when I tour next. Meanwhile, i'll use the Decathlon wheel for Audaxing.0 -
The age of it put it in a museum and ride safely with a new one.
SeumasJust hold it there,don\'t move and don\'t drop it, I\'ll be back in a while.(If it\'s safe).0 -
