Newbie Q Focus Cayo Headset Adjustment

Tested my new Cayo on the malvern hills today great ride.One issue though Ive noticed when checking the bike over there is slight play in the headset.Ive tightened the top bolt but still get a bit of play,got the manual out fiddle here fiddle there no cure.

Im a total novice to cycling especially adjustments of bikes should I be concerened perhaps I should take it to my LBS.

    You have to slacken of the stem to steerer clamp bolts first. Then gently tighten the cap nut. Tighten up the clamps again and check for play. If still slack or too tight, repeat until you get it right. Don't over tighten the top bolt though or you may damagethe bearings, however, some time you haveto tighten a bit more to preload the bearings then back off slightly.
