What is the maximum difference in teeth between the inner and middle chainring? Someone told me it is 14 is this correct?

there is no reall correct number. but there is a maximum difference that mechs will shift.

Because I want to swap my 22 32 44 set up for a dual ring set allowing me to fit a chain device. I like the 22 ring as I can grind up all the hills, but I quickly run out of gears with the 32. I do quite alot of dh but I have to ride to all the spots and this involves alot of climbing. So i may be wanting the impossible but I'd like to have two rings, but be able to still go as fast up and down hill. I know i might have to compromise somewhere but advice on the best possible combination would be appreciated. Cheers

I had a 32 tooth and had the same problem, I then changed to a 34 tooth and it was better, try that, I will be running this setup after my saints arrive tomorow so I can let you know how they feel.

there is no max for small to middle just total range 22 T and a middle to top of 12 T for shimano, and sram does not say.

Right, the new saints are fitted, go for the 34 tooth, the mech may be a bit fiddily at first but you'll get there.
