Do I need a spacer? Fulcrum 5 and 8 speed SRAM cassette

Someone told me I would need a spacer to run an 8 speed cassette with Fulcrum 5 wheels as they are for a 10 speed set up. Asked the same question to Wiggle in the comments when I ordered the wheels and they put in a Shimano little silver spacer.
Is this meant o go on first before the cassette i presume? When I do this I then can't tighten up the lockring as it won't catch the thread.
Its an SRAM 8 speed cassette and without the spacer it 'seems' to go on ok and tighten up etc, not tried it on the actual bike yet though, will i have problems when I try that?
thanks

An update...got the cassette fitted and seems to fit fine and change gears fine. About to go out and road test for real!
Another annoying question to all you fountains of knowlege...on my Alex wheels which came with my Giant SCR3 there is a plastic 'disc' at the back of the cassette before the spokes. Never really thought about it, until now of course when I fit my new wheels up and realise I don;t have one. Is this just a sort of dust cap or something? Do I need one for my new set?0 -
You don't need a spacer to run an 8-speed cassette on a 10 speed body - the splines are the same width for both - though you've obviously now found that out.
You don't need the plastic disc - it's there to stop the chain going in the spokes if it overruns the cassette. If you don't have one though you should make sure the gears are properly adjusted so the chain won't overrun, worth checking given new wheels which might put the cassette in a slightly different place.0
