Hello - my dad is looking for a new bike and I'd like some advice

He is mid fities, weighs approx 13 stone and will use the bike for recreational purposes in and around west Wales (and a forthcoming holiday to South West France - including Pyrenees). Key factors for him are triple chain set, weight and comfort

Any suggestions?

I went for this and have not been disappointed:

I've got a 2007 Allez Sport Triple £599, if they have the right sizes.

    I love it.

I cycled to work today, 7 miles.

7 minutes quicker than a slick shod MTB 8)

Can't really go wrong with an Allez or any of its peers in that price range. Also look at Trek, Giant and Lemond for a decent alternative.

My recommendation would be to look out for something second hand as you'll get more for your money but if he doesn't want to go to the effort then head to you local bike shop and have a test ride of the Spesh, Giant and Trek offerings.

I'm in West Wales so tell him I'll see him around!

How about a Trek Pilot 1.2? Mine has a triple. It has a compact geometry and you can flip the stem for a slightly more upright riding position.

    Nothing wrong with it.

Preferred the Alez, that's it. No reason. Just did

Dawes Audax sport. Or the Ridgeback equivalent.
Mudguards fitted, and you can mount a rack. They are more useful than the run of the mill race bikes, and maybe a little more comfortable. Some of the cheap alloy frames can really beat you up!
