I have saved up some money, and thought it would be a good idea to buy a frame and build it up, or maybe buy a whole bike if its what i want. I have spent ages looking on ebay but do not know what to go for...

i have a dialema, Full sus or hardtail?

i have been riding for about 2 years with a marin b17 05 but want a change.

im looking for a tough freeride type bike, long(ish) travel, which can do jumps, trails and pretty much everything!

Kona Stinky?
Orange Ms Isle?
Kona Coiler?
Specialied P All Mountain?
Giant Stp?

Any advice/links would be good!

Thanks

:P

  • Okay...

Those were like the bikes i had been looking at... any other thoughts?

My budget is about 600-650, would a hartail be better for my budget?

I was interested in the frame because i want to buy one, used, to build up ... not neccessarily the whole bike.

santa cruz chamelion's (not sure how to spell soz) are good all rounder frames for £425 i think!
  • there nice, but that leaves me with 200 to spend on everything else, fork brakes gears ect.
  • To be honest for £650 you're not going to build a bespoke bike - probably better looking for an 'off the shelf' hardtail, for that money they're quite a few very good bikes out there (and many threads!
  • i was planning to buy used parts! EBAY!!!

Going to have to be very careful doing it this route - never quite sure what you are getting. I just dont think you can get a decent frame built up for this money unless it has extreme budget parts.
  • i know what you mean...

    Frame 150-200
    Fork 200
    brakes 100
    gears and shifters 50
    crank & bb 50
    that kinda thing...

    ???????

Not to mention wheels! You can get the Hone groupset on Merlin with wheels for 300 quid which is a good start:

Tora fork 130 or so, and still only leaves 200 for frame and finishing parts! I think I'd look for a sale bike from pauls cycles or even the GT Aggressor XCR at halfords - this has a tough frame, 130mm recon fork, external BB - good for the money
