Yet another odd creaking noise

I know there have been countless threads on this but i haven't found the exact scenario i'm experiencing doing a search.

whats happening is a loud clicking/creaking sound that only happens when i'm at the bottom of my pedal stroke on the right hand (drive) side only, i.e when i push down with my right foot. It only happens when i'm pedally with a reasonable amount of effort (and it gets louder the harder i pedal) bizzarely it doesn't seem to happen when i'm out of the saddle (i have checked my saddle and seatpost and they seem fine).

Any thoughts would be appreciated, i'm a bit worried that something is about to fail spectacularly any minute.

Remove the crank arm and grease it, lots of grease. good luck. Sounds like the creaking I had.

I had exactly the same problem last year. Turned out to be the the integrated shim in my seatpost. The weld had broken (probably from overtightening) leading to the most annoying creak everytime i pedaled down on the right side (must be something to do with strongest leg - never really figured that out). Frame went back for re-weld and has been perfect since. Even though you say the seatpost looks fine, have you greased it?

SADDLE, beg or borrow a different one just for a test, or drop some oil into the joints where the saddle rails connect to the shell. Also remove and grease the seatpost unless it's carbon of course then you should just clean the post and inside the seat tube.

  • Check the female pedal spindle threads in your cranks - I had a similar thing and it was the pedal about to pull out!

As everybody's answers have made pretty clear it is almost impossible to diagnose noises by description. Even when you are riding the bike it is hard enough as noises tend to be transmitted through the frame. The best bet is usually to go with the most common offenders. Eg. headset, crank, BB, Pedals. Rule them out first.

Hypocrisy is only a bad thing in other people.
  • Grease, grease and more grease :)
Where evr metal meets metal, grease it! (excpting brake and gear cables ofc :))
Im kindof embarrassed after many years of cycling iv only relatively recently learned this - too l8 tho for my quill which is seized in my headtube :(.
Not long back sorted a similar irritating "tink" when i was pedalling by greasing where the rails of my saddle fasten to the seatpost.
    Good Luck and Be Fecund
