Hi,

I just picked up an old bike and have found that thread in one of the crank arms is threaded and I can't use the crank removal tool. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ben

Expain what you mean - there often was (once) a thread inside the axle end of the crank to screw the crank removal too into (after you had removed the axle bolt).

Not an uncommon problem - some of the solutions include riding the bike hard to try and loosen the crank or using an automotive ball-joint splitter or a 4-arm-puller to remove it.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • I removed the axle bolt OK and then tried to use my crank removal tool. The crank removal tool would not thread as most of the thread has been stripped. There really is not enough thread left for the crank tool to grip, so I had though of using a hammer on the BB axle while putting some tension on the crank arm, although I don't want to risk damaging the frame.

Thanks for the advice on the automotive tools.

As said, a small ball joint splitter which fits between the crank arm and the BB shell is the best bet - it's a pronged wedge that will force the two apart and will not damage the BB shell in anyway
