bike maintenance

im thinking of replacing brake cables and gear cables on my trek pilot 1.0 road bike and was wondering if its best to do it myself or take it to bike shop for a full service my bike is 1yr old

    Do it yourself mate. Its easy peasy. Just buy a dedicated cable cutter to get through the cables and cable housing. DIY. Its the way foreward.

    Sure you need to replace all your cables if the bike is only 1 year old?

    i dont think i need to replace any cables yet but what i cant understand is if the cables stretch why cant they be loosened off and tightened again why do they need replacing

    undo them

    tighten up all the cable tension adjustement bolts back to a turn or two off of fully tight

    re-attatch cables in correct place

    job done....

    unless the brake action/gear shifting is shoddy then i'd just keep em tightened up
