broken thread in shoe for cleat - am I screwed?
Hi,
I was merrily screwing in a new cleat into the sole of my shoe and I overtightened the screw causing the thread to break. Result: can't screw in cleat. Worse possible result: have to get new shoes.
OK it's a good excuse to get some new shoes but the thrifty ration book person inside me thinks it's crazy to spend £XXX just cos of a broken thread.
My question is: can I fix the problem?
All post very muchly appreciated!!
Cheers,
Andy

If it's just that you've sheared the bolt, use a screwdriver or something to unscrew it. If you've stripped the threads, it depends on the shoe. Quite a lot have easily-replacable plates in the sole that you screw the cleat into. Check if your LBS has some, they used to come with some Shimano pedals.0

A helicoil and some araldite could help here. Assuming the cleat has other screws to fix it to the shoe as well, you could be ok by letting the one screw not be as secure as the others. Depends on the system you have but worth a try...0

Thanks fellas! There's hope yet.

just drill the bolt out, then fit a new blanking plate inside the shoe - I've got some if you haven'tFacts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0

I've had the same happen and drilled it out no problem.0
