which hybrid tyre

Hi, I'm running out of rubber on my rear so it's time to change.
I use my cruddy Dawes 301 to go about 5 miles each way to work. Roads all the way there but recently have been detouring on the return through some steep woods for maybe 1/3 distance... woodland dirt path, up down, traverse, roots... often damp.
Also need to be able to ride up/down curbs and handle the winter slippery-ness.
I have Specialized Crossroads 700x38 at the mo, theory being wide is best for curbs and off road especially when it rains.. also they were the knobbliest hybrid tyres wiggle had.
Front has the old profile ones where the tread runs almost along the tyre and my 1st rear developed bad cracks and was replaced by the new one which is slightly different, better centre rolling and no cracks.
I don't really want to get them again as I've had quite low mileage off that rear. yeah OK been skipping sometimes with hard braking and popping the front up various shenanigans to break up the boredom.. all the same not very long lasting.
I do like the Aramid anti-puncture stuff though... very impressive.
Does anyone have any tips?
Is my thinking correct re fat and knobbly at the sides but not smooth centre either? or would a thinner (32-35) be better... think they are higher psi so not so good for curbs?
I've had a little look at cyclo cross tyres but I bet they stink on roads, what about the Michelin Transworld Sprint, Continental Twister cycloX
I take it 29" tyres are 700c, anything decent listed as that size?
Cheers kev

I've used a pair of semi slick 1.95 for over a year but did get fed up with the way the bike cornerd on the road. I'm currently running some 1.5city slicks. They cope ok with grass but any loose surface causes problems and I wouldn't want to go over wet grass<center>

I have never had punctures using Schwalbe Marathon Plus or Schwalbe Marathon XR
