Hub/ freewheel slip

I have a problem with my hub/freewheel. A couple of times when riding today, I lost drive to the wheel when turning the cranks. The cassette was rotating as turned by the chain, but the wheel didn't appear connected. After a few spins, it connected again. Does anyone know what the problem is? and how to/ how much to fix? My hubs are Shimano XT. Cheers

could i put a cheaper freehub body ie shimano deore on an xt hub?0

Yes, it will fit, but maybe false economy, I'd get an XT.0

Sort it out ASAP. I had the same problem on my bike, and it's really dangerous to lose drive halfway across a junction.
GarryCycling is too nice to waste it on getting to work.0 -
Now to hijack this thread, its not worth starting a new one
What hub would fit on a Shimano M495 hub?
Why are some free hubs 8 or 9sp specific and others are universal?

Correct me if im wrong but i always thought that u had to buy the exact freehub for the hub u use i.e. XT for XT, LX for LX etc??? :?:
Im in the market for a replacement myself so im interested to see what i can get away with.0 -
I am pretty sure that for standard Shimano rear hubs the same fixing mecahnism for freehub body.
Just checked with Sheldon and he says that the bodies are pretty much fully interchangable, but a few exceptions:

but as the boddy is also the outer bearing race for the bearings on that side you could have different race finishes...... Mmmmmm"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Lol, I wondered that myself nick!0

Thogh some shimano hubs use different bearing surfaces inner and outer race depending on model for example Deore uses different polishing techniques on the cup and cones.0
