Attacked by chavs

I'm so upset and freaked out right now.

I got off the train for the 3 minute ride back to my house, on this end of my commute, and just before I pulled out into the road a little car full of chavs scremed past. I remember thinking "Phew, I'm glad they aren't going to pass me" and pulled out.

I got to the roadworks and there was a long queue, stupidly I cruised to the front I was so dozy I didn't think about the car rammed full of chavs that I'd seen driving so recklessly just seconds before.

I got about halfway up the 300m hill, standing and honking it as per usual when I saw the car that was ahead of the chavs, then suddenly it struck me what I'd done. I was in a very strong primary and moved a little further to the right, glanced back and they were there screaming down on me. I ducked and swerved to the left as the passenger tried to hit me by hanging out of the window. I nearly hit the curb and managed to bunnyhop up it and then swerved back onto the road.

I managed to chase long enough to get their numberplate (which I have now forgotten), but pulled to the side of the road and called 999. The Police operator was very good, I managed to give the numberplate and a good description of the car. Then it drove back down the hill to go back into town so I could give a firm description of its general direction. The police operator promised me that she would pass the details to all units out in the town.

Now I'm scared because not only am I shaken up from the attack which happened at between 22-25mph (based on the speeds I allways climb that hill), and if he had hit me that would have hurt a lot, but the car could have hit me, or I could have fallen - none of which would be good. BUT also I ride up the same hill every day at the same time, wearing the same kit, and now they know who called the police on them.

Damnit why would they do that? Are they that fu*king stupid that that is actually entertainment for them? What did I do to them? I'm most upset by how thick I was - I saw the danger, knew the type, but was cruising my way home. If I'd just sat behind them in the queue, I could have avoided this whole thing. I just don't understand it. I wish my housemate was here.

Not your fault at all. You did the right thing.

The police have the reg, if they try anything again, then the rozzers will do 'em, as that's a minimum of dangerous driving.

    mate sorry to hear this

you cant blame yourself in anyway though for the actions of those fuckin idiots.

take a few days off the bike and gather your thoughts. let the police do their job.

dont worry about retribution. they are chavs and probably not clever enought to work out how/when to meet you again

You may have read this, my post (in red). I hope the situation is similar enough to your own to give you hope that maybe the coppers will get them - and I wasn't able to give a complete reg.

I was out on the same route at the same time a few times in the following weeks, no problems
  • Coppers get them. That's almost hilarious.

Sadly yes. Hopefully you'll see them wrapped around a tree in the very near future!!

I've had incidents when I've said to myself "what if I had taken a different route, or sat back in the traffic" but why should you have to think like that????? I wouldn't worry about seeing them again too much, there's so many cars on the road, especially down here, that I'd be surprised if there was another run in with them.

Man, that sucks. Just keep the experience for next time and you'll remember to spot the danger.

As for future altercations with yoofs in cars - even though you always take that route, they probably don't - probably out for a jolly. And the attempted assault was probably opportunistic (however unpleasent) - doubt they'd choose to go after ya.

Don't let the cowards spoil your ride. Fingers crossed for a result from the police.

Bummer Jacomus, I feel for you. I'm long chuffed you avoided any serious incident though, and well done for calling the cops.

I wouldn't worry about retribution - you're probably not the only person they've pissed off enough to call the police.

Sorry to hear that mate. To echo what others have said, I've had a few incidents where I've thought "I really hope I never see that person/car again". Thankfully, London's so full of people that I never have.
  • Thanks for the support everyone.

I rode in this morning, and was a bit nervy - it must have shown because I was cut up and pushed around by drivers a lot at the start. Towards the end I was back to normal, and everything was peachy (if a little damp).

I'm going to go home a different way tonight - through the university campus. It adds about 5 mins to a 3minute journey so its hardly significant, and I can just twiddle through with no cars at all until I have to cross a road to get into the road I live on.

I haven't heard anything from the police, but as Gambatte said, it took his report about 2 weeks to come back with a result. I remain hopeful, but not very optimistic.

What a nightmare - sorry to hear it Jaco. Whereabouts was it? I know your commute's not a million miles away from mine.

    Mini-thread hijack alert...

Some good news: my company has finally installed secure bike parking at our office. No longer must my delicious bike live in the rain all day. He is currently tucked away underground!! :D:D:D
  • Thanks Homercles, this wasn't in London - I ride to and from Clappy J to catch a train further south.

And woo for secure underground parking. My firm has it - you can only enter using an electronic swipe card, and it has security guards and a barrier too with cctv everywhere (We suspect its not so much to protect our bikes, but more to protect all the top brass's aston martins and ferraris that park under there!)

Jacomus, if you feel safer changing your route slightly for a few days, do it. I would, and have done this in the past...I was getting a load of racial abuse from the occupants of one car, caught up with them in traffic, opened their boot and rode off quickly. After the 'red mist' had cleared, it occurred to me this might be their regular route...Doh! Anyway, never saw them again.

I'm sure you'll be fine. You did the right thing.

Dont worry about it too much, traffics an interesting thing and you're unlikely to see them again soon, I rarely pass and notice identical vehicles. I can think of 3 vehicles that I wouldnt feel to comfortable to see again and havent yet (or before in the last case), there was the green rover with the doddery driver who side swiped me, there was a mini parked in the cycle lane who I shouted nice bike at as I passed and he gave a hand gesture, and a knackered yellow plumbers van today, that Im sure I would have recognised ifI had seen it before...
