Chainring replacement

The big chainring (alloy) on my Marin is looking a bit worse for wear. It's got a Truvativ FireX chainset - not sure what the BB is, but it's got internal bearings - will it be square taper? The rear cassette and chain were replaced quite recently, but the BB seems to be in good nick. Should I buy a chainring, or buy a new crankset/BB while I am at it? Can I replace this chainring without disturbing the bottom bracket? What should I buy? Can I do this myself without investing in a BB tool?
Sorry for all the questions... hey, that's what this forum is for.

Si.

So should I go for another Truvativ ring, or a different make?

Presumably I can't just swap the ring out without first removing the cranks from the BB?

how to remove the ring bolts.

cranks do not need to be removed.

any ring designed to work with others and with the correct bcd.
