Got accepted at York Uni after results day (wohoooo!!!!!!!),

BUT!

Big problem, :?

Contacted the university and although there is some accomodation for bikes, the "secure" accomodation they have, has been broken into several times and i've been told that I shouldn't bring my expensive racer to University.

Only problem is that it's the only bike i can train on (my other bike is too old and rusty to keep up with club runs or do training on), and so I'm worried I won't be able to keep training at Uni- wandering if anyone who lives in the area or has any info. about bike storage?

Any advice or recommendations welcomed!

HELP!!!!

Chuck it in your room mate. Cant be a student and not have a bike in your bedroom no matter how small the room is!! You can also get insurance that'll cover your bike in high risk areas such as uni campuses.

Well when I asked them about that at the General inquiries desk they said- A) the rooms aren't really big enough and B) You're not allowed to.

At the moment I'm thinking of maybe ebaying a cheap second hand bike- maybe try to get a Giant SCR/OCR 2 or that kind of spec. Something that can do club runs and I cant rain on without worrying too much about it getting wrecked.

I'd still rather save a bit and take my nice bike though!

First of all, well done on getting into York - I did my PhD there and thought it was a great place to study. I had private accommodation all the way through my spell there, though, so the bike was generally kept in the house or a handy shed/outbuilding. I suppose, if you end up in campus rooms, you could risk keeping the bike indoors and hope the cleaning staff don't get stroppy. Years ago I went for an interview/open day at York for my 1st degree, and there was certainly evidence of bikes being stored in rooms back then. Blatant plug time (speaking as a club member of some years standing!) - if you don't want to go riding alone when you move up there, can heartily recommend Clifton CC for social rides, more serious training and competitive stuff
Mind you, when I was at York ('99-'03) the University CC was very MTB-orientated; might be a bit road-friendlier these days.

  • York is a great place. I live near by and like to go there for the day shopping and stuff and bet it's great for students.

Unfortunately if your in halls you might be a bit stuffed as they won't let you keep them in your room or even the building because of the fire/trip hazard thing. :( Some uni's will even fine you if your a repeat offender. If there's a cycling club at your uni it might be worth chatting to them at the freshers fair stall thing and see what they suggest?

Either way I wouldn't leave it in the rack. It might not get nicked but remember not everyone is that precious about bikes so will happily just chuck theres against yours scratching it up nicely.

You said you don't want to buy another bike for training. Trust me mate that £200 will be like p*ssing in the ocean by the time you leave uni

Once your in your second year and have your own house (hopefully you will make some cycling chums to share with) you can pack it to the rafters with bikes and kit 8) . Just get insurance though!!

Robbie's got a very good point that I left out - generally you don't get University accommodation after the 1st year as an undergrad (as they like to set it aside for the next year's intake of newcomers), so you can go private and look for somewhere with bags of storage space.

One thing Im wandering about is maybe instead of taking my posh bike up there- leave it down here for the winter, then after term1 when they find out what a model student I am  they'll let me keep it in my room..... maybe

Thinking of getting a fixed wheel for winter as well- only about £200 and will survive in the semi- secure bike places. Belcher do you think I'd be able to keep up on club rides with a fixed wheel/single speed?

I got OS Map 105 Landranger and York looks pretty flat...

(I had a look at Clifton CC website and it looks amazing btw!!!!)

I think the cycle club in York is quite MTB orientated as well.

    Where do Clifton CC meet?

Yes York is Flat. but head north and you will find a few hills.

bike in Halls under the bed. a bike bag might help if there are a few people who complain.

York's mostly flat, so as long as the pace isn't too brutal - Clifton do a Saturday social ride with a tea stop which is quite gentle and intended for newbies and leisure cyclists - you should be OK on a single-speed bike. The club meets outside the City Art Gallery (near Bootham Bar and the De Grey Rooms) at 9am on Saturday and Sunday mornings. There's also a Tuesday night chaingang during the racing season.

How often are you going to want to ride it? Whip the wheels off, store it under the bed/in the back of the wardrobe/behind the door/on top of the wardrobe/somewhere else..

At the mo I'm doing 20 hours a week of training roughly (about 350 miles a week), I won't have time to do that much but If I could get out on the club runs, plus an audax once a week then that should keep me pretty fit.

I'm Thinking of just saying screw it- and spending my bursary on a new (well 2nd hand) bike and stuff :D

Thanks for tips though, I think TBH keeping a cleanish bike in a bike bag in my room shouldn't be too objectionable. :)

  • It might be worth checking the web to see if they have a cycle club before you invest in a hack bike and bag though. Speaking as someone who raced the summer before going to uni and then not touching a bike for four years it's a big lifestyle change moving away and making new friends, and there wasn't a club at my uni so fell out of doing it. Sorry to put the downer on things but it is true. If you find a club at uni or otherwise and are still keen then you will find a way :D

Keep it in your room - nobody will care. Whatever you do, don't ask permission - they might say no! I kept a bike in my room for three in halls and nobody bothered. Useful clothes horse too.

Insurance and risking outside is your only other option (best avoided).

I had a chat to my bike shop today, asked if they had any kind of cheapish racers that I could still use for club runs and training and winter riding.

He showed me a 2006 Cinelli for £500 (down from £900), seems like a bargain as it fits perfectly, comes with clip on mudguards and SPD's, water bottle cages and water bottles. I'm far too tempted by this.

The good thing is it doesn't look very expensive and If I hid it behind my rusty old galaxy in the secure bike shed then it would be safe, and I'd love to have it. :D

Some1 persuade me that it's morally wrong to own 3 bikes!

Although it would give me a much needed winter racer though and I could do Audaxes and club rides, and it would allow my posh bike to stay posh....

    NOOO!!!

Save the money for Freshers Week: girls and beer need to figure much more prominantly in your decision making process now you are a Uni student.
