I see a raft of options on Wiggle etc, but are there any personal recommendations?

I assume that the ones that record directly to SD cards are the way to go??

  • I've wanted a helmet cam for ages, and keep almost buying the ATC-2000. But, I just don't know what a cam would do to the effectiveness of the helmet in a crash, though I am assuming it wouldn't improve it!

I think I will eventually mount the camera on my bars - its less flexible like that, but its not attached to my head.

I have heard lots of good reviews of the ATC-2000, but its a lot of cash to splash.

    Hi there,

it appears that most you could mount on the bars as well, but I imagine the vibrations through the frame might ruin/lessen the quality of the picture?

  • I have mounted my normal digital camera on my bars before (using copious aounts of duct take) and the picture quality was really very good indeed.

Your head moves more than the bars do, but your eyes remain fixed on what you looking at making the effect less noticable. I guess that the biggest advantage of helmet cam is that it "sees" what you do.

Is it really a good idea to mount things like cameras in or on a helmet. When your head hits the ground you don't want to end up extracting a bunch of metal housing and glass lens from your skull.

Or lights for that matter. I solve that by putting the camera on my handlebars, and not bothering with the helmet either.

Didn't see this thread untill now!

I have the atc2000 and the Archos helmet cam.

With the atc2000 like Jacomus said, you don't know what stresses it's putting on the helmet. But there are other options as mentioned and it is cheap and very robust.

And this is Archos. It's actually strapped to my head. And as you can see it gives a much smoother ride.

It's only recently that I've been having fun with my cameras. :D

Oh yeah check out the video cam thread for more info and examples of different cams.

I have to ask why you'd want to film your commute? The only really cool helmet cam footage I've seen was of bike courrier races in NYC, and those were chock-full of behavior that is not well accepted in the Commuting forum. That's probably what made them so cool. And it's my practice of that behavior that stops me from posting on this forum most of the time.

Don't take this as a dismissive comment at all. I am genuinely intrigued as to why you'd buy a helmet cam to film your commute. Please enlighten me.

And I really like this one. It's a great commute. Very well told and thoroughly entertaining (minus life threatening instances and still great stuff).

This one makes me laugh because even though I took out the sound I was kind of yelling at some of the guys walking up the hill to get out of the way!!! You might notice one girl pick up her bike and slam it down on the side pavement! And I had a good laugh with the guy I was coming down the hill with. Ah! How the memorieswould fade without our elecltronic friends!

In my last post I said that it was fun. I guess you missed that bit  Hope the above helps enlighten you a little as to why I use one (I don't use it everyday).

I guess I get it now. Should've had one when that lady took a right-hander on me and made me lose three teeth on Monday. Just the audio of me "thwearing at the thtupid thucking headleth mitheth" would've been real funny.
