Chainrings -is it important to get matching inner and outer?

I was going to change the inner on my cranks from 34 to 36T

I notice that the outer rings are supposedly different depending on the inners.

How important is this?

  • It shouldn't make any difference, especially with just 2 teeth. With 130/135 up-market double road rings, the outer ring is usually cut away, pinned and faffed-about with to facilitate changing between rings. (Allegedly.) The inner rings are usually plain, without any modification to the teeth. If your current 34 is plain and your new 36 is too, then just do it.

If you ever run a single front ring, use a plain-toothed one!
  • well I was thinking the outer ring will probably hav ethe pins and ramps positioned slightly differently to take into account the fact that the chain is starting off in a differnt place.

Just wondering if anyone knoew if that really made a difference.

Seeing as the response has been so low, I think I might try it out myself and see. Will post the "results"
