What's the current wisdom with regards with what to eat for breakfast before a cycle commute? I'm assuming that a bacon & black pudding roll is not best idea....

TBH I`ve tried all that whats best for your commute, but really some cereal is all ya need. I tend to have big glass of water and then a biccy just to get the sugar levels up and then go for the burn  Once i`m at work a full english is the order of the day  Mind you i do a 30 mile commute .

  • I actually fuel up an a cup of tea and vitamin tablet, catch a train 30mins then ride 35mins and breakfast at work. Sometimes, if I had a small dinner I grab a cereal bar.

Thats what I found suits me best, but I don't like riding with much food in me at any time. I rely on snacking my way through long rides, using cereal bars, fruit etc as I go, so I never have much in the stomach at once. One cereal bar lasts me about 30-40mins.

I have a high carb diet, and also drink PSP22 so don't really need food whilst riding, but do strike the balance between empty stomach and having something in there provinding energy.

I normally have porridge in the morning, which suffices me.
Unfortunately for me, the month of Ramadhan starts next month which makes commuting by bike a tad more difficult (no food/water during daylight hours...and, no, I can't work shifts).

Small portion of raw oats mix with natural yogurt and a banana sliced into it.

Banana is high GI to kick start and the oats are low GI to sustain you and the Yogurt has a bit of protein and fat.

And its quick and easy to make.

I leave it until I get to work to eat as don't really feel that comfy cycling 18 miles having just eaten. Then it's muesli (with nuts, seeds, dried fruit) and all of the lovely soft fruit that's around at the minute - backcurrants, redcurrants, blueberries, raspberries and of course a good helping of honey and milk. And coffee.

After that I don't feel the slightist bit peckish again until lunchtime.
