Upgrading Raleigh Quasar

I have just picked up a Raleigh Quasar. It is in reasonable condition, but I would like to upgrade it from 12 speed (6 on the back with a double) to 24 speed (8 on the back with a triple) so I can use it for touring and hilly audaxes.
I have managed to fit an 8 speed wheel on the back, but I am not sure about the chainset / bottom bracket. The bike it fitted with a Siguno GT chainset which appears to be secured using a key shaped tool. I would appreciate any advice on if and how I could go about upgrading the chainset and BB to a triple. I already have a spare shimano BB and Chainset, if this is at all compatible ?
Many thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben,
Your chainset & BB should be fine as long as the BB thread is the same as the frame (i.e. English thread). I used to own a Quasar years ago; assuming it's still got its original BB, the cranks are fitted with nuts onto a threaded spindle (as opposed to bolting into a tapped-out spindle) and need a socket spanner followed by a crank remover to get them off. The parts you mention that need the key are probably the crank dustcaps, from memory. Depending on how many original parts it has, you'll need a triple front mech in place of the original Sachs-Huret one; the original rear mech was a Suntour AR - short cage but might just be made to work depending on what sizes of sprocket & chainring you have.

David,
Thanks for the advice, I was hoping that the BB would be English thread, which should mean the upgrade will be fairly straight forwards so I'll get to work tonight! I've got a spare 8 speed rear and front mech, which I will put on as well. I'm in two minds on whether or not to install STIs, I will probably see if I can get away with leaving the downtube shifters.
Thanks again,
