Crank Removal

I'm trying to remove the Shimano Deore LX cranks on my bike, in order to replace middle ring and little ring. I removed the screw from the crank into the bottom bracket, and having done that I assumed the crank would just hammer off, but they just won't budge. How on earth do you get them off? Do they just slide on and off once that screw is removed, or is there something I haven't seen still holding them on?

    year of cranks?

if they are not HT2 then you will need a crank puller.

    have a read of parktools.

A crank puller? Oh ok thanks for that. The year? No idea, it's an old Saracen Powertrax, maybe 10 years old +.

Deore LX has been arround since 94.

as a Square taper bb then in 97 as an octalink HT1 and now the current ones.

I'm pretty sure it's a square taper one, so having read the Parktools stuff, it looks like a crank puller is the thing. Thanks for that.
