I have a Pompino frame and want to fit a BB and crankset . Trouble is which one .The Pompino has a 68mm BB shell and takes a spindle length of 113mm .I was thinking of a Shimano BB . The ES51 Deore/Tiagra looks like a possibility and comes in at under £20 at Parker .Its is Octalink .Does this sound sensible ? And what make of cranks and or chainrings should would I be able to use with this ? Am I limited to Shimano due to the Octalink format ? I'm pretty new to this and I still have difficulty telling which makes are compatible with each other .Any help appreciated !

An octalink BB only works with octalink cranks. Shimano made the vast majority of the Octalink cranks, though there are a few MtB brands that did, so presumably a couple of road ones.
ISIS BBs are only compatible with ISIS cranks. They're also next to useless, since they die so quickly.
Square taper is generally compatible with itself irrespective of brand, but through practice not design.
