Lockout question again

Hi all

I am still unsure about this lock out lever on the forks on my Gt Avalanche 1.0 Disc with SR X-100, 100mm of travel w/. 32mm alum stanchions, magnesium lowers, with lock, preload and hydraulic damping forks.

I understand that the lock out can be fully on to lock the forks when riding on flat ground or on the road to reduce dive and bob as stated in a earlier post by supersonic , but can this lever be set half way on any amount of position between on and off to reduce dive and bob when riding off road ? will the forks be damaged if it is on too much and you hit a big bump ?
as the fork does seem to make a clonk noise if i hit a bump in the road with this lever in the on position?

I have managed to set the sag using the preload dial on the other leg with great help from supersonic (thank you ) :D:D but is there more use to the lockout lever than on for road use and off for off road ??

Many thanks

Roger
