Lockout question again

Hi all

I am still unsure about this lock out lever on the forks on my Gt Avalanche 1.0 Disc with SR X-100, 100mm of travel w/. 32mm alum stanchions, magnesium lowers, with lock, preload and hydraulic damping forks.

I understand that the lock out can be fully on to lock the forks when riding on flat ground or on the road to reduce dive and bob as stated in a earlier post by supersonic , but can this lever be set half way on any amount of position between on and off to reduce dive and bob when riding off road ? will the forks be damaged if it is on too much and you hit a big bump ?
as the fork does seem to make a clonk noise if i hit a bump in the road with this lever in the on position?

I have managed to set the sag using the preload dial on the other leg with great help from supersonic (thank you ) but is there more use to the lockout lever than on for road use and off for off road ??

The fork has a blow off valve if a bump is encountered when locked out.

Yes, its used for off road climbing aswell, primarily when your out of the saddle hanging over the front end, it saves the front end bouncing about like skippy on acid.
