Looking to buy shifters and front and rear mechs for a new build.

currently looking at X7, but XT is only £15 more and X9 £33 more. is it worth payng the extra or is X7 good value for money

Get XT.Reliable, easy to service, and get parts for,and can be bought cheaply if you shop around.Try www.merlincycles.co.uk

Id go the XT route awell, much smoother shifting action and alot more places to find a spare if you break it somehow.

Always sram for me , i'll never use shimano gearing again and my X7 works just fine, can't fault it.

X9 is a lot more expensive than the comparable XT.

  • I used to be an XT man, I now have SRAM X0 and I will NEVER go back to Shimano if I can help it! Far less faffing about with cable tension, and a nice, satisfying clunk every time you change gear.

That said, there are those who say Shimano is the only choice. Inreality, you'll probably be happy with both.

I've just upgraded my bike to X7 shifters & Deraillure, cassette & chain, and have to say i'm well chuffed, super easy to setup, install and index perfectly, really smooth shifting.

Another bonus is (from what I've heard) due to the 1:1 ratio virtually no effects on shifting from cable stretch or grit and grim, and I got a real good deal from merlincycles.
  • a mate of mine runs XT on his bike, and hasnt had any problems with it as far as i know, it consistently runs smoothly and efficiently.
  • sram for me, x-9 is a step up from the x-7 aswell although they both perform better than shimano in bad conditions imo
