Should there be a gap between... (NOW WITH MS PAINT WORK!)

The bottom of the headset and the forks? There appears to be a gap of about 4 or 5 millimetres there on my bike and i hadn't noticed it before until yesterday when i was inspecting my bike for damage from my slide out earlier this week.

Sounds dodgy but i think you will have to post a good close-up picture before i can be sure exactly what you mean.

That is not right then. The lower race of the headset should be hard against the crown of the fork. It may be that it has never been right though as i can't see how it could come away during use after it has been pressed on.

ok well its only recently been rebuilt so i shall take it in, the only reason ive noticed is cos my bike has started creaking this week and i wanted to check if there was something that i could see myself. How difficult is it to fix? Is it a lengthy process as i need my bike for commuting...BMC TM01 - FCN 0

So long sa there is no damage and the parts/tools are to hand this is only really a 30 to 40 minute job. If i am correct about the reason though (crown race not fully pressed home) i would be very dubious about the bike shop that fitted it.

It has just occured to me though, if you have a modern frame with an integrated headset and you have slightly misslabelled your diagram there may be nothing wrong at all. Is it possible that the grey section is the headtube?

my frame is a 2003 cannondale this one:

Just above the black bit (the forks) in the photo i have taken (which i can't upload as i dont have a cable at work (this will be rectified next week!)) is a silver part which says cane creek on it, then comes the frame.BMC TM01 - FCN 0

Do Cane Creek make integrated headsets?

That is a non-integrated type headset. If yours is the same as that you should have no gap as per my original answer, sorry if i caused any confusion.

PS: Cane creek make integrated headsets as well.

it is the same as that, i read the s-2 straight off the headset as my bike is with me in the office. I shall take it back to the shop tomorrow and get them to fix it as thats obviously not right. I probably wouldnt have noticed it had my bike not been creaking! I will tell them that it was like that when i got it back off them and now ive taken some advice its not correct could they fix it. Im always in there so it shouldnt be a problem fingers crossedBMC TM01 - FCN 0

Sorry, can't view your diagram at work, so flying blind. Is the gap between the crown race and the fork or between the crown race and the lower cup? Have you taken the headset apart recently? If the former, then the crown race hasn't been seated properly - best to get your LBS to do it, a quick 5 minute job. If the latter, then it may be down to incorrect assembly - probably the lower bearing fitted upside down. The bearing has a chamfer on the inside which should seat neatly over the crown race - get it upside down and you'll get a gap and creaking too.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

i dont take anything apart that i dont know about! and i dont know about this stuff!
Im taking it in to my LBS this weekend for them to have a look at my back brake as in the wet i always skew off towards the same side. They know me so well now that on the phone just now he reminded me of this fact as i had genuinely forgotten! I dont even need to say who it is on the phone anymore as well! Thats the kind of service you want from your LBSBMC TM01 - FCN 0
