If I recall correctly the Control Tech is ISIS BB only - on that basis alone I would steer clear personally, but then my ISIS experience is MTB only... but they are generally terrible BBs.
If you can get the FSA in Octalink format (they used to do some of their cranksets in an Octalink fitting) then you can run a Shimano Octalink BB - otherwise go external bearing. An MTBer, but with skinny wheel tendencies...0 -
Neither - get a Campagnolo Chorus - as beautiful a piece of bike engineering. The Control Tech and some of the FSA models are near identifcal apart from the stickers - there are plenty of others too - look at the Quest ones from the Bike Shop in Harrow too. Onyx, Token, Control Tech plus many others are exactly the same.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

I have the FSA Carbon Pro (on Octalink) on my "good" bike and the current Ultegra chainset on my other bike. I'm loathe to admit it but the Shimano chainset is far better - Its not really any heavier but its noticably stiffer and doesn't creak. When the FSA is to be pensioned off, I think I'll go back to DA or Ultegra on the good bike.'This week I 'ave been mostly been climbing like Basso - Shirley Basso.'0

i'd second that- it's cheaper, lighter (as a package including the external BB cups) looks better and works flawlessly.
also, i too would avoid ISIS at all sosts, they're crap which is why they're so heavily discounted on a lot of websitespm0 -

Is it a bit of a 'faux pas' to use Campag cranks when the rest of the bike is Shimano?...
It somehow wouldn't 'feel' right to me, but I like the look of both the Campag Chorus and the Sram Force carbon cranksets...An MTBer, but with skinny wheel tendencies...0 -
No it's a faux pas to have the rest of the bike Shimano when you've got Campag cranks :twisted:0
-
Control tech also makes them for shimano (octalink) but is there a difference between the FSA nd the control tech ? not really hu ? i already have the FSA on so i was wondering if i should replace it or not0
-
having everything shimano with campy cranks don't look good !!! but as far as performance goes i would'nt doubt it0
-
I'm with Mr Montydog ... an ultratorque is the puppy you're after.
My LBS tells me he sees more than his fair share of failed FSA chainsets ...
In Italy LOTS of people ride Shimano with campag compact chainset.
Go for it! Chorus is better value than Record IMO (for the chainset)0 -
I gues you are right, i already have all sorts of brands on my bike i guess one more wouldnt hurt. i currently have the FSA Carbopn pro team issue. i have been using that set for 3 years now, it hasnt given me trouble but i just wanted to upgrade for the look (really) cant afford one of those hollow new ones nor the zipps ( whcih are sweet) and remembered that i had a newer control tech laying around. that the only reason i wanted to re place it. i guess i will keep the FSA till i get my hands on either the campy or the SRAM Force ( wi=hich is the groupset i have)0

If you want to avoid the Campagnolo vs. Shimano issue then go for Fulcrum Racing Torque - it's Campagnolo badged up differently; should remove the issue, though of course you'll always know you had to go to these lengths simply because you chose the wrong gruppo in the first place

Just looked at the Fulcrum cranks on their website. Those cranks look so much like my Chorus Ultra-torque cranks it's scary.0

Not really a surprise they look similar when Fulcrum is owned by Campag
For people who want campag but without the worry of the fashion police shooting them for mixed Shimano/campag bikes.0 -
There is a new Centaur UT carbon crank too, if you must get a carbon crank. Personally, I think they all look ugly next to alloy goodness like 2005 Record...0

mtbers have no problem mixing parts

For some reason it's nice to have a matching kit of parts on the road bike; mine has Campag everything bar the hubs - 'cause they're Vuelta factory-built wheels - and the headset (Stronglight A9 - probably the best value threaded one you can get, wouldn't use anything else). On the 'cross bike, though, I opted for whatever was lightest and/or did the job best and/or was a bargain at the time I built it! Hence it's a real pick 'n' mix - Middleburn cranks, Mavic rear mech, Shimano BB, Modolo brakes, Campag rear hub, Hope front hub, Cane Creek headset, etc., etc.

Mind you, I've got a $himaNO part on my otherwise Campagnolo equipped bike - It's the band on adapter for the braze on front mech0
