If I do ok in my exams next week, as a reward I'm looking at some new brakes, changing from crappy Hayes soles.

I can get either Hayes 9s for £99 or Avid juicy 5s for £125, set up properly, the soles were ok at best, but whats really annoying is the crap Hayes lever bolts that rounded off very easily.

I know many people swear by the powerful Hayes', but when I tried an Avid I did like the lever feel a lot. So, your thoughts please.

I would pick the Juicys, Personally though i would pick the Juicy 3s over the Hayes 9s, as i found them more powerful and to have better modulation. I couldnt tell the diff between the 3s and 5s so the extra money saved could buy you something extra :)

I also prefer the feel of Avid levers than Hayes ones.

Thanks, yeah the lever feel was much nicer - but the thing is I can get a pair of 5s for £125, whereas a pair of 3s are £130 on CRC, so I may aswell go for the 5s if I do decide because they have the split lever clamp.

Well yea definately go with the 5s then, I put some Goodridge hoses on my 3s and they have fantastic stopping power now, its amazing how much difference it makes when your really apply alot of power.

I have the hayes 9's and like them but i've heard a lottt of good on the juicy 5's and 7's so i'd recommend those.

I have used both - the Hayes work fine but the 5's are definitely the ones I would go for - more powerful and less chunky design.

Isn't the main diffence between Juicy 3's and 5's that the 5's have lever reach adjustment that means you can position the lever nearer or further from the bar for optimum feel and leverage - good when you are only using 1 finger.....

any how I have 5's and they are sweet. :P

IMHO steer clear of Juicy 5s..very good to start with then after a year .....

    I`ve just binned :x :x two Juicy 5s owing to :

pump up which couldn`t be cured by bleeding

two master cylinders leakjing as well for no reason

I`m not alone on this too, met bloke in LBS who binned both his after 6 months, makes a year seem good going.

Long term reliabilty NBG, sent back to Avid for comments!!!

Avoid and go for Hope or similar
