We have an abusive post from someone who is telling the UK that they should change to suit them, including adopting a foreign currency. It is apparent from the troll's phrasing that they are not resident in the UK, but think we should fit in with their convenience and/or prejudices.
Alex pointed out that the forum is international. My reply was that someone who does not live in the UK should not be insisting our laws are changed at their whim.
In short, the UK is supposed to be a sovereign state. We were and are told that EU membership does not affect that. Then we get comments about being "allowed" by the EU to do something.
The USA use pounds, feet, inches etc that are exactly the same as ours. They require that all goods in the USA are labelled properly in the appropriate units. The EU tried to change that by banning all markings other than metric, and were told they would not be allowed to export to the states if they did.
That is the only reason they backed down.
As for trading partners, before the traitor Heath sold us down the river to the Commissars of Brussels, we used to have a trading group called the Commonwealth. Because of a shared culture and historical links, Commonwealth citizens had opportunities to travel here and vice versa.
All of that is now gone. Now, for the benefit of certain politicians and a few multinationals, we have to do as we are told and bugger democracy.
European citizens can't be trusted, you see. When given a vote on continuing the Great Experiment, they keep giving the wrong answer.
Firstly, I am actually a resident in the UK and was merely pointing out that being part of the EU I thought it made sense to embrace the metric system and currency. Why is that countries such as France, Germany Italy etc have switched to the Euro but the UK has not.
Your reply has a certain air of arrogance about it suggesting that you think the UK is far better than other parts of the EU. In addition another post tried to pull me up on the spelling I used because it wasnt the British spelling. That person should focus on the argument instead of worrying about spelling (which they were wrong with)- again aggrogance.
You say my post was abusive, who was I abusing? There was nothing perosnal about it, as opposed to you calling me a troll which is personal abuse.
You need to wake up and take a good hard look at yourself.0 -
In case no one in the UK realized it yet, the internet is kind of international. As it happens, so is cycling. Considering there are two countries on the face of the earth that still use miles, the question could very well be turned around. But I guess we're not so pedantic.
The real reason cycling happens in KMs is mainly because most important races are held in countries other than the above-stated two, and are thus calculated in KMs. Pretty much the same reason Formula 1 speeds are in km/h. And for the same reason all physical sciences are practiced in the metric system.0 -

Your post was hectoring and abusive to the UK as a whole. Your spelling is wrong, full stop. I would be interested in seeing how you define it as "correct".
You are clearly not a UK subject, and the point about that is very simple: you are not bound to the UK and therefore not affected by its loss of sovereignty.
As for your idea of "making sense" it may have come across better if you had phrased it more diplomatically. Perhaps you are unaware of the fact that the UK electorate has never, ever been asked about joining a European Union--they were told it was only ever going to be a common trading area.
As for suggesting the UK is far better etc, please highlight those remarks. If you are suggesting that desiring a bit of self-determination for my own country is arrogant, then you really are rather odd. I assume you are a septic from your spelling and phraseology, so can we also assume you are going to condemn Washington and the signatories of your Constitution as arrogant?
When are the States going to get with the programme? When are they going to speak Spanish* like the rest of America?

Ok in an attempt to calm thing a little, let me ask this:
when soemone says they're doing or have done a 'century' ride does anyone (in the uk) honestly think ooh 100km that's a lot and when you talk about your training does anyone say i'm upping my kilometreage this month? probably not, i suspect.
anyway i'm an architect so design in mm but a lot of old school clients don't understand that so i always have to convert things and i don't find it an issue.
BTW Tourist Tony - i don't think you came across as arrogantpm0 -
Thank you. I merely want this country to have the same choices as our...resident visitors'...If I had a stalker, I would hug it and kiss it and call it George...or Dick
