Compact Question

Hi all,

I'm currently running Campag Veloce with an 11-23 cassette and a 53-39 chainset. However for the upcoming Bealach na Ba I'm changing to a 50-34 compact and a 12-25 cassette. Will my short cage rear mech handle this OK? Also I gather I'll need to shorten the chain a bit - 2 or 3 links maybe?
Flying Scot? You must be joking!

The rear mech will manage the 25 rear sprocket ok and you may, just, get away without having to shorten the chain. Try it and see but i'd hesitate to shorten it if the compact is only going to be fitted for one event and then replaced with standard rings thereafter - saves breaking, lengthening and re-joining the chain at a later date, potentially creating weak/tight spots during the process.

When I changed mine over I expected to have to shorten the chain but didn't in the end - which might suggest that it was actually too short in the first instance !

    Good luck
  • Taking the "chain on the 2 biggest sprokets + 2 links" chain sizing technique, my envelope says the 2 setups need almost the same chain length, only 1/2 a link in it.... YMMV
  • Your mech will handle it OK, I run the same set-up.
