Tiagra/105 triple crankset and chainring. How different?

Hello All,

I currently run a 9 speed set up on my flat bar with the new Shimano tiagra triple crank (FC-4503). I managed to get a great deal on a 105, 10 speed triple crank (FC-5603). I have been trawling the web trying to get a clear cut opinion on wether this crank will work "as good as" the crank I currently have in a 9 speed set up but cannot seem to find any clear cut consensus on this.

The only thing I think will be different (other than hollow forging on the 105) is the spacing between the chainrings but think this will be so minimal it will not make too much of a difference. Is this correct?

Would it make any difference if I used the 9 speed chainrings from the tiagra crank on the 105?

I remember seeing in the March (I think) C+ issue that the big chainring on the Tiagra and 105 were the same but they aesthetically they appear slightly different.

Any replies / opinions / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Chris

Just try it - you may have to re-adjust the front mech. The chainrings will fit onto either crank.

    Thanks Blackhands.

    Will do.

Looking to change the cassette ratio from 12-25 to 12-23 but thinking may be better to stick with the wider ratio with the FC-5603, changing the front mech to a FD-453 from a FC-443 and a HG-73 chain when the current one wears out (getting close to 1000 miles on it).
  • You certainly shouldn't have any problems with this. The chainrings will be identically spaced. In any case, the left shifter is what would need to be changed if the spacing was different, not the mech. But this won't be required because they are definitely spaced identically. As the chainrings are also the same size (in number of teeth), you probably won't even have to adjust things after installing the new crankset.

I can't remember for sure whether Shimano's 9-speed gruppos have the same tooth thickness as their 10-speed systems. There's a slight possibility therefore that your 9-speed chain will have a tiny bit of lateral play while engaged on the teeth of the chainring, but I don't know this for sure. It won't affect performance or anything else in any case (though obviously using too-thin a chain on fatter teeth would be a problem).
