Garmin GPS's and Memorymap...

I've got access to a GARMIN VISTA Cx.
Can MEMORYMAP data work with this?
Is it possible to 'just' download the datapack directly to the UNIT or do I need special software?
Does anyone have any field experience with these things... or should I just stick to my trusty Map and Compass...?
Cheers
Pete

The GPS unit itself can only handle the Topo maps Garmin produces as far as i know. The Topo maps aren't as detailed as Memory Map (which are based on Ordnance Survey maps) and are at additional cost. Memory Map is good for plotting a route which can then be uploaded to the unit and will be navigable on the Topo map.0

Ah, Ok, and presumably I'd need some kind of interface / software between the Garmin and a PC with memorymap software on it?
Does anyone have any experience with this at all... give me some more details on it?

The interface is just the USB cable and installing the right drivers. The MM software is then able to export (routes / tracks) to and import from the GPS unit. I've never bothered with the Garmin software MapSource that comes with the Topo maps to try to plot routes.0
