Fox DHX 4.0 / Marzocchi 888 RV Suspension on Big Hit 3

I've just bought a second hand Specialised Big Hit 3 with the above suspension, supposedly it was hardly used but the suspension feels very soft. I expected it to be a bit firmer, after riding a couple of friends Full Suspension bikes.
I realise it's got allot of travel and wonder if this is purely because of how the previous owner had the bike set-up, or if this is just the case with the bike?
The forks aren't a problem, as I think it's as simple as pumping some air into the forks. But the rear suspension is where I'd like to adjust if possible.
Does anyone have any tips or advice?
Thanks
