Do self extracting bolts mean that you just need a tool like a giant allen key to remove the cranks or is it more complicated than that?

I know you used to need a crank puller but selfextracting must be easier?

  • Correct. You should only need an allen key for removal and re-fitment.

I have fitted the allen key and started to unwind and after about 10 turns or so the bolt got tighter and the same for the other side. Should I push through the tightness or not?

    Thanks for the reply
  • Correct again.
As the bolt unscrews it will loosen.
As it starts to screw into its "cover" it will go tight again.
Keep going and your crank will come off.
    Job done. :)

I will keep going. I got a bit worried when it got tighter I thought I was going to damage the threads or something. Thanks for your help it looks like my nect opportunity will be Wednesday evening. Should be a simple affair of just taking off the cranks unscrewing the BB and transferring them to my new BJ Vigorelli. Shame about the rain and the summer as it has ruined many cycling days.
