Double chainring - Derailleurs and shifters

This follows on from my other post today, but is different enough to warrant a second thread I think.
I'm in the process of building a new bike and I've just got to the chainset (I've been using an XT chainset borrowed from my hardtail up to this point). I've noticed that I just dont use the outer chainring, and I'm very tempted to go for just a double + bashring.
Are there any special requirements on the front derailleur and shifters to run a double, or will my current triple shifter/derailleur combo work providing I don't shift up to the outer ring? Can you use the limit screw to prevent this 3rd shift position?
As always, your help is much appreciated.

Use the current, wind in the H limit so that you can't overshift.0
