hey

last week after my cycle i put my bike in the car with weels off. brakes are Hayes Hydraulic HFX-9.

when i came to put the weels back on the pads were too close and the front i couldnt get the weel on and the back i could but was so close that the weel hardly moved. the brake levers feel the same as normal, not solid or pull too easy.

i took the pads out and tried to push the pistons back in but they just keep moving back together or once pulled brake level (with pads back in) moved back together.

Help would be nice

cheers

Do you have the manual or service guide? Is available on the Hayes site. Sounds like the pistons may be sticking. Rinse with water, then lube with hydro fluid.

    Hi,

Don't pull brake lever without the wheel in place or you will have this problem. :P

    Hi,

The brakes are self centering. By not having the wheels in place and pressing the lever they have nothing to close against, and so press against each other like you described. Push back the pistons by using a 8mm ring spanner, replace the brake pads, put the wheel inplace, slacken off the caliper mounting, press the brake lever and hold, tighten the caliper mounting, then release lever, and you should hace reasonably centred brakes. 8)
