Hi
Going to upgrade my brakes to 105s. Looks like it might be an easy job, but is it? My bike maintenance is v limited!
Do I need a crimping tool and new cables (bike 3 years old)?
Or should I just give the shop another tenner to do it and save some oaths?
Cheers

You don't strictly need new cables but it is probably worth your while replacing them as you will need to retension etc so might as well change them anyway.
The job is pretty straightforward, any set of pliers will crimp the nipple on the end of the cable but if you are replacing the cables it is imho worthwhile getting a decent pair of cable cutters to get a clean cut on the end of the cable.road0 -
Have a look at Sheldon Brown's website for technical help as well.
What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!0 -
not that difficult and quite satisfying.
I think I would change the cables as the whole new brake assembly will 'feel' new where a new caliper with old cable might not.
agree also on the "buy some good cable clippers" thing. I got some bikehut ones from halfords which are ok for around £12. I say 'ok' because I think there are sharper / heavier duty ones out there such as park, but these can be close to £20 which always sounds a lot for a pair of clippers!0 -
It is an easy job. I'm pretty cack handed but installed new 105's no problems a couple of months back.
If the cables are in good condition reuse them - especially if they run under the bar tape.0
