I'm thinking of trying a mechanical disc brake up front on a Pompino. For a road commuter plus maybe towpaths etc. I've spotted the Kona Project 2 fork and also the Surly Karate Monkey fork as disc-ready. I notice that both appear to have eyes for mudguards. Two questions:

- any other options for a fork, without spendling lotsa cash?
- I want to run full guards, is this at all practical?

Do you really need a disc if you're only riding towpaths.
I ditched the canti's on my pompino for V's, and use Avid Koolstop brake pads. I generally ride 50/50 on/off road and the stopping power is still pretty good. Similar to the performance of the mechanical discs on my MTB (although I do use sintered pads).

edit: I sometimes run full mudguards on the pompino. As I was running wide (37mm) tyres at the time I bought some 45mm SKS Blumels. The front guard fits fine. But I had to cut notches on the rear guard to fit around the chain-stays. I'd say a 35mm (wide) mudguard will fit without modification. But ask on the on-one forum if you want clarification.
