I think the Abus Granit X Plus 54 is a safe bet but i think you already knew that.

would you pay more for kryptonite ones?!

or are they not really worth it....or does it matter

Abus Granit X Plus 54 IMO is a better lock because one it is cut the twat nicking your bike can just turn the lock around in the mechanism so he will have to cut through the other side.

But all locks can be broken its all about slowing the twats down.

  • i've got an abus granit but it's bloody heavy, i wouldn't want to have to carry it round anywhere.
If you're getting one to carry with you, i'd recommend a kryptonite evolution mini D-lock, i've got one it's excellent, i think the smaller size of it gives less chance to lever it open from inside, and less room generally for thieves to operate.
Not too difficult to use, I thought it would be a nightmare finding some railing or something to get it near enough to that it would fit round but in fact it's quite surprising how many opportunities present themselves. Somewhere like a supermarket you should have loads of possibilities.
If you want to get a lock to leave locked somewhere that you regularly go, then just get as heavy/well-reviewed one as you can afford.

I agree, I have a mini D-lock permanently mounted on my commuter and it's surprising how easy it is to find a secure place to lock it. It's very rare I have any problems.

I want an Abus Granite 59. They look and perform amazing. But way too expensive for me.

I've got a Krypton cable. Was a little worried when I saw one cut outside an M&S. But the cyclist used it as their main lock and used the D lock like a padlock!!!

Anywho got the Abus granite steel o flex. Heavy, but it looks tough!!

As far as this type of lock goes it is probably close to as good as it gets, I gather it resisted cutting for about 90 seconds in a test, however the Granit X Plus D lock would be much more robust.

Wrong! um... the steeloflex lasts 1min 42.4 secs!!! Just enough time to rob a bank!

Seriously. I also have an Abus D lock (not the X plus). Just wanted variety with the cable after I saw the Kryptonite one cleanly cut in half.

I know it may sound like a daft idea but I always undo my quick release skewers after securing.

It just gives me peace of mind if somebody does cut through the cables they might fall off riding it away, and hopefully cause themselves some serious harm. I mean other ideas could be thrown into the mix such as undoing the brakes, loosening the stem, loosening seat post.

One I have tried before is to use cable ties on the spokes and seat/chain stays.

If you are going to do this I really shouldn't have to point out to tighten them back up again!
