skidding/slipping gear in smallest gear

Does anyone have any idea why my mountain bike is slipping in it's smallest gear under pressure (ie just when I need it - going up steep hillls) it seems to skid/slip evry sso often on the cog - trouble is it doesn't do it on the workstand as there is not enough pressure on it - it's only when i need it climbing, and it only happens when I'm in my smallest cog at the front and lowest (biggest) gear at the back?? Any idea - it's driving me mad. Could it be a worn chain?

sounds like a stiff link in your chain? maybe?
  • why would it only do in in the lowest gear and not all the time then?

same goes if it was a worn chain?
i had same problem one day when cycling up a steep hill, derraileur was set perfect etc. only did it on largest rear cog, i put bike upside down and turned pedals backwards to see the bottom jockey wheel being pulled forward then pinging back as stiff link came through. prob not that but worth a try to eliminate it any way.

im presuming that you have your deraileur h/l limit screws set up ok and that your cassette teeth are ok too?

mine did tjis after i replaced the chain
since then i replaced the cassette and it's been fine since
