Just been reading a thread on Hardknott Pass, which is about 15 miles from me. Thought it would be a good idea on my day off next week. Then thought of Scafell Pike, which is a much better idea. I'm just wondering whether it's legal to bike up.

I've had a quick look on Ordnance Survey website, but the mapping is very restricted to a small square onscreen. very annoying.

Having walked the pike from all directions,(i think most of it is FP rather than BW)i'd say its a no-goer on a bike, more of a carry up.Its not as MTB friendly as Skiddaw or Helvelyn
Hardnott is a tough but doable road climb though
    Its grim up north(snigger)

Don't think it is legal to go up scawfell pike. Plus I do not think you could bike up there.

You can bike up Skiddaw - it has a bridleway going right ot the top so its legal. I did it 4 years ago on a Trek 4300 with v-brakes. Had too push it up most of the way. But managed to ride back down. It was very gravelly as the path had just been resurfaced- not sure what its like now.

Hardknott pass is definately a testing climb and I would suggest 100% rideable for the tour de france man but the reward isnt particularly good (at least not to my knowledge) as theres no bridleway descent, its tarmac the whole way (unless of course your talking about doing it on a roadbike).

Scafell Pike is footpath and is largely a carry (stairs for an hour) similar to Nan Bield if youve done that, but isnt legal.

Skiddaw is good (helmet cam vid) if you get a decent day for it, it was really poor visibility when I did it last, its quick, reasonably flowing with some technical bits if you look on the way up.

The 3 passes ride (Gatescarth/Nan Bield/Garburn) is also worth it if your looking for something hardcore albeit I wouldnt do this on your own.

    I wouldn't - it's an illegal carry.

I think there is an off - road route from hardknott by the way, but I can't remember the name.
