Shimano 105 8 speed brake/shifter problem

I have recently aquired a very nice Edison TT bike, it is in vgc only the R/H (8Speed rear) shifter is not working properly or even at all....it moves over when you push the lever but doesn't stay, can these be stripped, is it a usual problem, has anybody got a spare one that works?...it is the Champagne and grey 105 one .

    just in case anybody else has a problem with these I have sorted it, just spray in loads of WD40 inside the housing and keep moving the levers whilst pulling/pushing the end of the rear mech cable , it soon frees up.
