New Router and connection problems.

Hi, have just bought a belkin router and wireless adapter as have just invested in my own computer. I have managed to wire the router up via ethernet and into the telephone line via an adsl filter.
The problem starts when the computer connected directly to the router wont accept the incoming connection. Previosuly we were using a speedtouch modem connected onto the usb port and now the belkin which connects to the ethernet will not accept the incoming connection.
The wireless adapter which is connected to the new pc (on vista if this makes any difference) runs perfect. Thats what I am on at the moment. The older computer is on XP.
Any ideas as to why the internet on the directly connected computer doesnt work would be much appreciated. cheers!

Don't know if I can help or not but... when you say the computer won't except the incoming connection. What exactly does it say/display?0

Turning off any software based firewalls would be the first thing to try.
Also make sure that you have DHCP enabled within the router unless you are using static IP addressing. If using MAC filtering on the router, disable this to see if you have incorrectly entered (or not entered) the MAC address for the Ethernet card.
Try a different Ethernet cable (or port on the router even) as well just to be safe, and make sure that if the Router has Switch capability, that the cable is not plugged in to the uplink port on the Router (if one is present).0
